Painted Dowry Chests
Lithuanian dowry boxes, also known as kraičio skrynia, are chests that were traditionally given to brides as part of their dowry. They were filled with items like clothing and linens to be used in the bride’s new home.
This FREE LIVE ONLINE talk & presentation explores the rich tradition of painted dowry chests in Lithuania, focusing on their symbolic and artistic significance in folk culture. It delves into the vibrant floral and geometric motifs and the craftsmanship that made these chests both practical storage items and cherished works of art. By examining historical examples and regional variations, the presentation highlights how these chests embodied themes of love, marriage, and family heritage in Lithuanian traditions.
We will also talk about painting your own small boxes using materials available at craft stores. A PDF with traditional motifs to use in your own art will be provided.
This is a FREE talk available to non-members & members.
